I just got out of an assembly by Randall Eller on the magic of smart choices.

It was wonderful

He talks about the brain and what violent video games, guns, drugs, etc. do to the brain and gives the kids a 30 day challenge to stop watching tv and playing video games.  He does cool tricks and the kids loved it.  He will mail the kids a free dvd on magic if they meet the 30 day challenge - keeping a simple log and parent signatures.

OK, yes, kids could cheat.  What a great way to TRY though and to get parent involvement.  He has studies that show that kids who stop watching and playing violent tv/video games have a decrease in violence/acting out at school.

This would be awesome to do in the fall in conjunction with red ribbon week.  I'm asking him to come back in mid Sept. 2006 and challenge kids again.  This will be my red ribbon week project.  I'll promote the 30 day challenge on radio, newspaper, etc. and then start Oct. 1.  Our school will have a celebration at the end of 30 days - which will be the same day as the end of red ribbon week.  I'll put up a big 30 day count down outside my room at school and teachers will be asked to participate as well.  I'm sure our parent teacher organization will sponsor prizes for students and teachers who meet the goal.

Anyone else want to join me?  I'd love to organize this at least with my fellow Independence county counselors.  We could all set dates for Randall to come in Sept. to challenge the kids.  Contact me if you want to do this together.  I'll see many of you may 9th at the Melbourne co-op meeting - i'll bring pictures of the event then and more info if you want it.

Randall Eller is the most exciting and most dedicated illusionist I have ever met. His magic and illusions are most impressive. After seeing Randall perform several times, I finally realized that the magic isn't found with in his props and illusions, it's found with in his love and concern for people, especially youth.

Randall, it was a pleasure to have you in our district this year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your wonderful performance and message of Human Excellence versus Human Mediocrity. Your illusions provide the perfect attention getters for your audiences and the program provides well balanced timing with illusion and message. Truly, Bay High School students will not forget the important guidelines you outlined for exercising your body, mind and heart. You have exhibited true excellence in your performance and message for our students.

Mr. Eller,
We appreciate your coming today to share the wonderful presentation.  The students' attention was totally captured, and they heard your message loud and clear.  It was a great presentation! We are going to bring you back for your "Bullying" program. We can't wait to see it.

Dear Randall

I wanted to let you know how much the students, faculty, and staff of Cotter truly enjoyed the show you presented to us on 5/20. Several teachers commented to me that you were the best speaker/magician they had ever seen! Your message was clear, creative, and excellent in the way you presented it with the help of several students. The themes of personal responsibility, kindness to others, positive self regard, good decision making, and doing and being one's best are EXACTLY what I had in mind for the students to hear. Many times no matter how much we as educators stress these various themes to our students, they are often ignored. It sometimes takes an outside individual such as yourself to come in and present these themes for the kids to truly "hear" and take them to heart. Thank you again for a wonderful time of fun and good humor in the midst of teaching some valuable life lessons.  May God richly and abundantly bless you and your family as you make a difference in the lives of thousands.

Rebecca Cruse, Counselor, Cotter Elementary, Cotter, AR
